[ Suzanne's short bio ]

I grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. As a child, I remember planting myself on the floor working with pencils and crayons and paper for hours. Well into my teenage years as my passion for art began to take lasting shape, I found myself in a similar place- with a passion for making art and an insatiable appetite for all things art.

Suzanne Tanner ChitwoodIn part my love for the outdoors lead me to Colorado College where I studied art and art history. I continued at the University of North Carolina where I received my BA in Art History. Excited by and determined to my art training, I attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and then at Tulane University where I received my MFA in Drawing and Painting.

After graduating and a brief stint working at an art auction house in Los Angles then freelance in film and video, I moved to Pensacola, Florida. There, while pursuing my own art work, I taught Design at the University of West Florida and Art in the Escambia County Public elementary Schools. I started a collaborative children's book project via the US Mail with a friend. She wrote the text and I illustrated. That project eventually evolved, in a very round about way, into my first book Wake Up Big Barn.

That book was followed by Boom Chicka Rock which I illustrated for John Archenbaugh.

I live in Charlottesville, Virginia with my family where I am currently working on the illustrations for Amy Gibson's book Split ! Splat !
